Kenpo Hits Switzerland

Martina Downey reports

An Irish Kenpo demonstration team recently participated in an International Martial Arts Festival, which was held in the city of Geneva in Switzerland. The Irish team was led by Professor Edward Downey 6th degree Black belt and the team consisted of John and Richard Burgess 4th Deg Black Belts, Brendan Osborne 1stDegree Black Belt, Aisling Downey and Rachel Coyne 3rd Degree Brown Belts, Declan Lee and Patricia Downey blue belts. The Kenpo demonstration team also included some of Professor Downey’s European students who travelled from Belgium and France to be part of the team.

The Geneva Festival had over fifty demonstration teams taking part and the event was televised by Swiss television. An interesting feature of the event was the overhead camera, which was held in position by a special indoor blimp, which gave a unique view of the action on display. The festival was a pioneering development for Kenpo in Europe and it was the first time that Ed Parkers Kenpo system has been displayed in Switzerland.

Professor Downey was very happy with his team’s performance and the audience’s reaction was very pleasing after all the hard work that went into the preparation of the demonstration. Professor Downey travels extensively throughout Europe teaching the Kenpo system and currently has students in Denmark, Belgium, England, France and Portugal.
